Moxibustion

Moxibustion

Picture

In Moxibustion, acupuncture points or specific body areas are warmed by burning a herb called Ai Ye (Folium Artemisia vulgaris, Mugwort).

There are different methods of application: a small cone of the herb can be burned on a slice of ginger, garlic or some salt (depending on the condition), sesame-seed size amount of the herb is burned directly on a point, or a cigar-roll is made of the herb and burnt above the surface of the skin/area.

Sometimes Moxa is placed on acupuncture needles to enable the effects and warmth of the herb to penetrate deeper. Studies have shown that Moxa is effective for treating inflammation and pain.
